Barclays uses Microsoft SharePoint to create e-learning tool
Barclays, a household name in international banking, needed a new e-learning tool for its internal Human Resources web site. The Creative SharePoint team developed an extension to the existing SharePoint infrastructure on time, and to specification. Barclays staff can now access the tool from around the world, and key staff members can update and change the content as and when they like.

New tool needed to share ‘core skill’ information
Barclays is one of the largest financial services companies in the world. It has been operating for more than 300 years with 27 million customers and 123,000 employees worldwide. With an international presence in Europe, the United States, Africa and Asia, Barclays is engaged primarily in banking, investment banking and investment management.
Barclays had successfully been using Microsoft SharePoint to share documents and knowledge within its organisation. The company came to us because it needed to build on the existing SharePoint structure, creating an extension to its HR department site. This new site would allow Barclays’ employees around the world to access ‘core skill’ information and learning tools from their desktops or laptops, no matter their location. Our brief was to develop a flexible, easy-to-use e-learning application.
Multi-skilled team delivers central, searchable system that’s easy to use
Because Barclays needed its e-learning application up and running in a short period of time, Creative SharePoint assembled a multi-skilled team including analysts, developers and consultants to oversee the project. The Creative SharePoint team worked onsite, together with Barclays’ internal teams, to respond to Barclays’ needs.
The solution we developed for Barclays features:
- extensive template design (allowing Barclays to build its own sites in the future)
- a central searchable repository for all e-leaning documents
- a platform accessible from all parts of Barclays
- a calendar/events system that allows users to review future courses and activities
- an easy-to-navigate system, which makes it easy to find information
Application accessed from around the world, updated internally
The e-learning application is now being accessed by users from all corners of the Barclays organisation. On-site training was provided to key staff, who now maintain and update all aspects of the system. This self-service aspect of the application allows Barclays to create its own sites, based on the original specification and templates. The project was completed on deadline and to specification.
