O2 uses Microsoft SharePoint to share knowledge, information

O2 is one the largest players in Europe’s telecoms market. An existing user of SharePoint, O2 needed additional functionality in order to share knowledge and information with its employees around the world. Creative SharePoint upgraded O2’s WSS platform, a solution that resulted in enhanced and simplified functions that the company’s global team can access simply and quickly.

Extended SharePoint platform gives users access to ‘knowledge and information’

Telefónica O2 Europe plc comprises mobile network operators in the UK and Ireland, along with integrated fixed/mobile businesses in Germany and the Czech Republic – all of which use ' O2' as their consumer brand. O2’s goal is to make its brand synonymous with innovation and quality, becoming an integral part of its customers' lives.

O2 had been using Microsoft SharePoint internally to successfully share documents and knowledge in small areas of its business. However, it found it needed additional functionality, especially in terms of the standard back-up, restore and document facilities. O2’s aim was to give its employees access to ‘knowledge and information’ via a single platform, from wherever they were in the world.

Creative SharePoint’s task was to extend the SharePoint platform to create an extensive workflow procedure. This would be built around document libraries and would allow users to import data from Excel into a more a manageable platform.

Platform upgrade delivers enhanced, simplified facilities

Initially, Creative SharePoint conducted a fact-finding exercise to learn more about O2’s requirements. Based on our findings, our recommendation was to upgrade O2’s WSS platform to WSS 3.0. 

Once implemented, O2 benefited from this upgrade in numerous ways. Some of the benefits for O2 include:

• auditing – the document management facility enables users to create and analyze audit trails for document libraries
• easier branding of sites
• simplified back-up and restore facilities
• improved workflow
• enhanced control over folder management
• a recycle bin

As one of the solutions for O2 was an extranet, Creative SharePoint recommended building a web interface that allows users to reset their own passwords through the portal. Now users no longer have to rely on IT teams to do this for them.

Successful project delivered on time, on target

Creative SharePoint worked closely with O2’s internal teams in order to achieve the targets set by the client. The project was successfully completed within the specified timeframe, including onsite training for O2’s IT teams, which are now maintaining the intranet and extranet. The system is now being access and used by multiple users across the O2 organization.
