Why and how these factors might impact upon your organisation’s resources of capital, land and estates?

The environmental influences and trends of PESTLE influences can provide an overall picture of the variety of forces at work around Creative SharePoint. This can also cast light on the key drivers of change and provide the basis for examining the future impact of environmental factors.

Identification of opportunities and threats can be extremely valuable when thinking about strategic choices for Creative SharePoint Ltd, in the future. There is usually a need for a way to how this collection of environmental factors might influence our strategic successes or failures.

“Technology developments are significant because ideas such as flexibility, teamwork, teleworking, networks and distributed and virtual organisations all point to radical new ways of working and organising work, based on technological possibilities”. Managing in a strategic business context (2005)

  • Creative SharePoint Ltd needs to prepare for the worst that can happen
  • Would you be able to restart operations quickly in another office or set yourself up to work from home?
  • Pricing Policy - Market at the moment

Depending on market trends reflects on our business and we always look to expand and grow to meet the demands of its clients.

Creative SharePoint measures prices in monetary values, with equilibrium being where the consumers are prepared to buy equals the quantity that producers are prepared to sell at that price. Our prices act as signals which co-ordinate the economic actions of individual decision-making units and provide a mechanism whereby changes in supply and demand affect the efficiency of resources in the economy as a whole.

Work life balance – attitudes to work & leisure. Flexibility obligation to balance of demands

An increasing knowledge of Creative SharePoint Ltd realise that there can be many benefits to allowing people to work away from the studio. Embracing flexible working will help us pick the best employees. Under the law any employee with a child under 6 or a disabled child under 18 has the right to request a flexible working pattern. According to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) guidelines, “an employer may only refuse a request where there is a recognised business ground for it to do so”.

There is more to this than just setting up remote working. Creative SharePoint Ltd has a responsibility on behalf of the employer to equip the home as you would in the office. We will seek out a risk assessment of employee’s facilities at home; this may come in handy later if we need to prove we met our duty to provide a safe working environment. One of the challenges for remote working is effective management. It is important for Creative SharePoint to negotiate clear milestones with remote employees and encourage regular contact. This will also depend on people’s ability to regulate themselves.

Also when thinking about flexible working practices, this would be beneficial as the studio may be located in a popular area, nice office environment, hot desks etc…

More flexible ways of working mean smaller, cheaper head offices, reduced transport costs, and a better work-life balance for staff, who are more likely to stay with the company. Mobile workers such as Directors can stay productive on the road by linking into the office via VPN, using laptops or handheld devices with data cards or wireless connections in hotels, airports and stations. Since it does not need desk space for the entire workforce, this will enable the company to have a small HQ in prestigious but expensive locations.

New discoveries/developments – speed of technology transfer

Getting the right equipment for your company is a matter of finding out what the latest technology is and getting that. You need to know the exact requirements. What we need to do with the technology – enhance delivery and service, improve flexibility, optimise business performance or differentiate themselves from their competition. We can then work out how to achieve our aims.

The type of business is an important factor in deciding what equipment your employees need for assessing information away from the office (i.e. laptops) wireless connections. The benefits are that it is much cheaper to install wireless internet than to run a cable into the office, which could involve digging up the street outside. It frees up staff so they can carry their laptops into meeting rooms and access the company’s intranet simultaneously. Also it allows flexible working but it is very flexible itself. If your organisation expands, just buy more wireless access points. For example Creative SharePoint have just bought an office down the road, just install access points there rather than laying cabling to connect the two. Creative SharePoint has knowledge of the importance of being ahead of competitors we need to fight for share of market, be able to offer undifferentiated products and services. Should more organisations come into the market, we will have to fight more, in order to maintain a share of the market.

The competitive advantage of Creative SharePoint may be eroded because the forces discussed change and/or a competitor manages to overcome adverse forces. The process of erosion may be speeded up by changes in the macro-environment such as new technologies, globalisation or deregulation. Creative SharePoint may then respond to this erosion of their competitive position, creating what has been called a cycle of competition as shown. See appendix 1.

Creative SharePoint understands the importance of the speed at which these cycles of competition might move. The speed of the cycle is very high, in the multimedia design industry. The frequency, boldness and aggressiveness of dynamic movements by our competitors accelerate to create unsteadiness, imbalance and change. The implications of how competition is understood and how we respond to these are extremely important.

Creative SharePoint must understand who our most direct competitors are. Also focus on what is the basis of competitive rivalry within each strategic group. Also we need to know what our critical success factors are, which are particularly valued by our clients and therefore, where we must excel to outperform the competition.

Creative SharePoint’s tangible resources, (physical assets), are the studio, staff and finance. Our intangible resources are non-physical assets such as information, reputation and knowledge. Typically, our resources are physical resources such as the number of computers/equipment, building and the production capacity of Creative SharePoint. The nature of these resources, such as the age, construction, capacity and location of each resource, will determine the usefulness of such resources. Creative SharePoint financial resources are capital, cash, debtor / creditors and suppliers of money (shareholders, banks etc…). Our staff resources include the number and mix (e.g. demographic profile) of people in an organisation. The intangible resources of their skills and knowledge are also important. This applies both to employees and other people in our organisation’s networks. In knowledge-based economies, people do genuinely become the most valuable asset.

Faster Technology is given rise to innovation at a faster rate and ever before, greater capacity of imitation and substitution of existing products and services. Customers have more choice and the chances of establishing a sustainable competitive advantage.

The basis of competition within an industry is dynamic and varies over time – sometimes changing very rapidly.

The expanding digital consumer electronics market has driven much of the recent improvement, especially the surge in digital music players.

The basis of competition within an industry is dynamic and varies over time – sometimes changing very rapidly.

  • Environmental Issues

Creative SharePoint Ltd promotes saving energy, to contribute towards saving the environment, we encourage:

  • Turning equipment off fully rather than on standby
  • Turning lights off when leaving a room
  • When buying electrical equipment for the studio, we look to buy energy efficient brands
  • Getting rid of rubbish properly and safely

What the implications might be of these factors for the your organisation

  • State of the art equipment for valuable knowledge or valuable brand if they are not used effectively, this will make the process of recruitment a lot more time consuming, less cost effective.
  • The efficiency and effectiveness of physical or financial resources of the staff depends, on not just their existence but how they are managed, the cooperation between people, their adaptability, their innovatory capacity, the relationship with customers and suppliers and the experience and learning about what works well and what does not.
  • If Creative SharePoint does not possess these resources, we will be unable to meet customers’ minimum requirements and cease to exist. For example the increasing demand for modern multimedia creativity means that customers have to possess quite sophisticated IT infrastructure simply to stand a chance of meeting their requirements.

Other important issues that may arise:

  • Threshold levels of capability will change and will usually rise as critical success factors change and through the activities of competitors and new entrants.
  • There is a need to continuously review and improve this resource and competence base just to stay in business.

Some industries and sectors have seen a progressive shakeout of suppliers.
As the process of competition makes resource requirements an increasingly difficult area to achieve, Creative SharePoint is able to spend money on high calibre employees and good buildings.

Creative SharePoint needs to be an organisation where people want to work and excel in what they do.

When recruiting we need to be able to offer competitive salaries and rewards. We will need to keep up to date with salary surveys based on our sector/industry.

Equality, Disability & Discrimination policies would have to be put into place.
Work Life Balance – attitudes to work & leisure. Work with Directors to ensure:

  • Provide an environment which staff can thrive in
  • Support and challenge staff to enable them to access the best in themselves
  • Build strong relationships, understanding the talents, strengths and needs of individual staff
  • Acknowledge and celebrate success
  • Build high trust throughout the company as it is the only way to get the best out of people
  • Be a model employer in your own work and stretch yourself, live the company principles and have fun. Work hard and celebrate success

Establishing a company policy on WiFi-enabled devices and communicate it to all employees. As wireless technology proliferates in portable gadgets, you need to set rules for their use to ensure business information is not at risk.

Ensuring Directors regularly review with flexible staff that circumstances still remain the same.

Ensure risk assessments are set up at people’s homes and ensure that workstations have been set up correctly with VPN software.

What strategic decisions will your organisation need to take in the near future as a result of these external factors?

Be advanced in technology. One of the issues which might effect Creative SharePoint are that travel times are getting longer as traffic congestion worsens but face-to-face meetings are not as important as they were. Improved and cheaper video-conferencing technology has made possible a whole range of remote business meetings, including online PowerPoint presentations

Create, apply and enforce security procedures for home-working staff as rigorously as you would in the office.

Create a policy governing the department of staff to ensure former employees can not gain access to sensitive information after leaving.

Keeping up-to-date with Employment Law to ensure Creative SharePoint Ltd is compliant.
